Does Ohio Have Electric Car Tax Incentives?
To help the world embrace alternative energy sources, the federal government can offer rebates or other incentives when you buy an all-electric or hybrid vehicle. Additionally, some state governments have electric car incentives, so you may be able to get multiple discounts on your next electric car. Ohio does not have state-specific electric car incentives yet, but you may still be eligible for the federal tax credit. Here’s everything you should know about electric car incentives in Ohio and other states with relevant programs.
Federal Zero-Emission Incentive
The state of Ohio may not have an electric car incentive, but the federal government does. If you have a plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle (EV) purchased in 2010 or later, you may be eligible for credits up to $7,500, based on the battery type. The actual amount you’re eligible for varies greatly depending on your vehicle’s make, model, year, and configuration.
You can find federal zero-emission electric car incentives of $7,500 on models like Bolt EV, Volt, and Spark EV, usually on models made before April 2020. It helps to check the electric car federal incentive lists and see where your car lands.
Other Green and Zero-Emissions Incentives in Ohio
Although Ohio doesn’t have an incentive specifically for buying an electric car yet, you may be in a position to take advantage of similar programs related to reducing emissions or helping the world reach a more sustainable future. Here’s a list of Ohio’s key incentives and grant programs related to alternative fuel sources.
Diesel Emissions Reduction Grant
Natural Gas Vehicle Weight Exemption
Medium and Heavy-Duty Emissions Reductions Grant
EV Charging Station Rebate
This is a rebate program by Firelands Electric Cooperative, a private, not-for-profit electric utility corporation. You can get $250 per Level 2 EV charge station you install at your home, office, and other possible locations. The station must have been installed between July 1, 2021, and June 15, 2022. Alternatively, if you don’t want to break the bank to install an EV charging station in your home, you can find an electric car charging station in the Youngstown area.
Commercial EV Charging Station Incentive
American Electric Power Ohio offers incentives for installation, hardware, and network services to create Level 2 and direct current fast charger stations. This program could save you on the cost of adding stations to a workplace, multi-unit dwelling, and other commercial applications.
Which States Have the Best Zero-Emission Incentives?
Depending on your situation, you might be able to qualify for electric car incentives in another state, such as if you’re moving. A few states offer notable zero-emission incentives, primarily significant tax credits on purchased or leased electric cars:
The Centennial State offers very good rebate credits for electric cars based on when you purchased them. You’ll get up to $5,000 for an electric car bought in 2019. For 2020, it’s $4,000, and for 2021, it’s $2,500. These limits are all halved for leasing. The program will be phased out soon, but it is currently one of the most generous electric car incentives available.
Connecticut offers electric and hybrid car rebates based on the vehicle type. Plug-in hybrids with 45 miles of range or more get $1,000, while less than that get $500. Battery-based EVs, the most common type of Chevy electric cars, get $2,000 if the range is 200 miles or more, $1,500 for 120-199 miles, and $500 for less than 120 miles. Finally, fuel cell electric cars get $5,000. The MSRP of the vehicle cannot exceed $60,000 for fuel cell cars and $50,000 for other types.
Another state with rebates as part of a clean transportation initiative, Delaware will offer up to $3,500 for battery-powered EVs and $1,500 for plug-in hybrids.
If you buy a vehicle below $60,000 MSRP in Maryland, you may have a rebate opportunity for the charging expenses. The rebate program pays $100 per kilowatt-hour up to a $3,000 limit. Unlike most states, Maryland also rebates home-charging equipment, applying the credit as a 40% discount up to $700.
The California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project has income caps you’ll need to fall within, mainly $150,000 per year or less for single filers and twice that or less for joint filers. If your income level fits, you can get $2,500 for a purchase or lease of a zero-emission EV or plug-in hybrid.
More and more states are introducing electric car tax credits, rebates, and other programs, and these aren’t the only states that currently do so. If you’re interested in moving to one of these states and plan on getting an electric car, you have some big potential savings within your grasp.
